Wings of Steel Book Launch Celebrates Conservation, Community and One Remarkable Eagle

A remarkable story of resilience, wildlife conservation and the enduring connection between people and nature takes center stage this September at the National Aviary.

On Wednesday, Sept. 2, from 6 to 7:30 p.m., the National Aviary will host the book launch party for Wings of Steel, celebrating the true story of Don German, a longtime U.S. Steel employee who spent 35 years in the industry while building a second legacy as a wildlife conservationist and educator.

Known throughout the region for his engaging “Eagle Talk” presentations, German has shared his knowledge of the bald eagles nesting along the Monongahela River with countless members of the community. His passion for these remarkable birds ultimately inspired the story told in Wings of Steel — the journey of a majestic eagle that was injured, rescued and carefully rehabilitated through German’s dedication and care.

The book offers a reflection on stewardship, perseverance and the responsibility people share to protect the natural world around them.
