Environmental Wins in 2024

Times are tough for a lot of people and it can be easy to fall into a sense of despair, thinking that nothing can be accomplished or improved. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. Here are just some of the wins the United States experienced this year when it comes to environmental justice. If you are wondering how these things happen, it is because of the people coming together and recognizing their collective power. Put pressure on your elected officials, join environmental organizations that speak to you, and recognize that while we all can’t do everything, each of us can do something that moves us closer to a greener, more equitable future.
There is so much to be grateful for this season, and it is inspiring to see what we can do when we work together for a future that helps the many, and not just the privileged few, thrive.
After the election in November, voters decided to:
- Reject a measure to repeal Washington state’s landmark Climate Commitment Act and its flagship cap-and-invest program.
- Support a constitutional amendment in Louisiana requiring state revenues from renewable energy to go to a coastal protection and restoration fund.
- Rhode Islanders voted in favor of a $53-million environmental bond, one-third of it earmarked for an offshore wind development by the Port of Davisville.
- Californians approved a US$10-billion climate mitigation and adaptation fund.
- And right here in Pennsylvania, the Shapiro Administration secures nearly $400 Million in federal funding to create jobs and cut pollution. The Shapiro Administration has advocated for this federal funding from the EPA since January – and this investment from the Biden-Harris Administration to create jobs and tackle industrial pollution will help build healthier communities and a stronger economy in Pennsylvania. This is the second largest federal grant in Pennsylvania’s history, strengthening the Commonwealth’s place as a national energy leader and positioning Pennsylvania to be at the forefront of industrial decarbonization.
