As the temperatures drop and fall trends start rolling in, the urge to shop kicks in. Malls become crowded and online sales seem endless, tempting us to add items that might not be necessary. Before you refresh your fall wardrobe with the latest trends, I encourage you to keep reading.

Assess & Revamp Your Current Wardrobe

Before making any new purchases, let's evaluate what’s currently in your closet. It's likely time to store away most of your summer clothes and bring out your fall sweaters, jackets, and boots. Take a thorough look at your wardrobe — does that sweater you bought last year need some mending, or do your favorite leather boots need a bit of polishing? Small repairs and touch-ups can extend the life of your items and keep them looking fresh. Check out Old Flame Mending for all of your mending and tailoring needs.

Shop Second-Hand and Vintage

Shopping second-hand is one of the most sustainable ways to update your wardrobe. Thrift stores, consignment shops, and online vintage boutiques offer a wide range of unique and affordable fall fashion. Not only are vintage and thrift stores a great way to help reduce the demand for new clothing production, they are an excellent place to shop for fall trends.

Opt for Quality Over Quantity

When buying new items, prioritize quality over quantity. Investing in well-made, durable pieces ensures that they’ll last for many seasons to come. If possible, look for items made of natural fibers like wool, silk, and organic cotton, which are more sustainable and often more durable.

Brands that I am loving:

Quince
Reformation
Kotn
Sezane
Everlane

Practice Mindful Shopping

Last but certainly not least, when purchasing new items, consider how they fit into your existing wardrobe. Aim for versatile pieces that can be mixed and matched with what you already own. Also, think about the longevity of your new items and how often you’ll realistically wear them.

Questions to ask yourself before purchasing an item:

  • Can I style this item in at least 3 ways?
  • Does this item align with my personal style?
  • Do I have something similar already in my closet?
  • How long will this item last in my closet?

Updating your wardrobe for fall doesn’t have to come at the expense of the planet. By assessing and revamping your current pieces, shopping second-hand, investing in quality, and practicing mindful shopping, you can enjoy a refreshed fall wardrobe while making a positive impact on the environment. Embrace the season’s changes with style and sustainability in mind, and you’ll not only look good but feel good about your choices too.
