Many people are exploring ways to create a more sustainable wardrobe. There are numerous avenues available to achieve this goal. One of my favorite ways to cut down on consumption and decrease my carbon footprint is through shopping at local vintage and consignment stores. Opting for second-hand shopping not only diverts clothing from landfills but also provides the chance to discover unique, one-of-a-kind pieces.
Pittsburgh is fortunate to have an abundance of second-hand shopping. In this post I’ll be sharing five of my favorite vintage and consignment stores in the city.
HEY BETTY!
Hey Betty! is located on Ellsworth Avenue in Shadyside. Co-owners Michael Ferrucci and Sandra Lawton have offered a wide selection of men’s and women’s vintage clothing since opening their doors in 1988. Their charming space is filled with high quality, unique items that come at a variety of price points. From men’s outerwear to women’s jewelry and shoes, every nook and cranny is filled with fashion finds from decades past. Be sure to follow them on Instagram and check out their Etsy shop for frequent updates.
EONS
While in Shadyside, continue down Ellsworth Avenue to discover another wonderful vintage boutique, Eons Fashion Antique. Founded and managed by Richard Parsakian, Eons offers a meticulously curated collection filled with decades of distinctive fashion treasures. Explore Eons for a diverse selection of styles, prices, and sizes, open seven days a week. Don't forget to follow them on Instagram for the latest updates!
AVALON EXCHANGE
If you like the idea of shopping second hand, but you find yourself overwhelmed at the thought of a thrift store, Avalon Exchange is a great place to check out. Located in the heart of Squirrel Hill, Avalon Exchange has a wide range of sizes and prices in their well-organized space. Whether you are shopping for contemporary, designer or vintage items, Avalon Exchange has it all. Additionally, Avalon Exchange buys gently used items. If you are interested in reselling items from your wardrobe, visit their website or call the store for more information.
SAM’S VINTAGE
If you are looking for something to do with your girlfriends on a Saturday afternoon, make your way to Lawrenceville for your next secondhand shop. Grab a coffee at Field Day and head across the street to the fabulous Sam’s Vintage. You will immediately notice the well-curated racks situated in the feminine and cheerful space. Sam’s Vintage carries a large selection of items from the 1980s, 1990s and early 2000s, along with even older items. Owner Samantha Barna is a wealth of vintage knowledge and is happy to share her expertise with her customers. Be sure to visit Sam’s Vintage and follow on Instagram to check out their inventory.
BOHEME
After shopping at Sam’s Vintage, make your way to Boheme Shops on Butler Street. Boheme Shops is a collective that features artists, vintage vendors, and makers from around the city. With over 20 vendors, you will be sure to find items that fit your style and budget at Boheme. Head to their website to see their list of vendors or follow them on Instagram.
THRIFTIQUE
Looking for a one stop resale shop? Then head to Thriftique, a large, mission-focused resale shop located in upper Lawrenceville. At Thriftique, you will find high quality resale clothing, shoes, accessories, and home goods. When you shop at Thriftique, you'll not only discover everything you need, but also contribute to a good cause. All sales support the National Council of Jewish Women Pittsburgh Section. Follow them on Instagram to view a bit of their inventory.
