I, personally, have been using dōTERRA essential oils in my home for over 11 years. While you may be used to the fact that people use essential oils for health and wellness, you may not realize that essential oils can also be extremely useful for cleaning. With natural cleansing properties, essential oils provide a simple yet powerful way to keep things clean. Essential oils are natural, but remember: purity matters, which is why I only use dōTERRA and often wonder, what did I do before discovering the Certified Pure Tested Grade (CPTG) oils.

One of the most appealing things about using essential oils for cleaning is that they come from natural sources and, when used appropriately, can be safely used around the entire family. Essential oils are extracted from plant parts and carefully curated to preserve the potent properties of the oil. When you use essential oils for cleaning, you are relying on the natural chemical component found in the oil to provide cleansing and purifying power.

Not only are dōTERRA essential oils effective cleaning agents because they are potent and powerful, but they also provide an alternative to cleaning products with dangerous chemicals. Many of the cleaning products on the market today are full of powerful yet potentially dangerous chemicals. While these products claim to provide effective cleansing benefits, they often contain synthetic chemicals and questionable ingredients that may put your family at risk when used around the home.

The beauty of using essentials oils for cleaning is that they only contain the natural chemical components originally found within the oil, so when used in proper quantities, they do not pose a risk and are safe to be used around the house.

dōTERRA has set the bar for essential oil purity, potency, and testing. Proper extraction and quality control methods allow dōTERRA essential oils to be free of any contaminants such as pesticides. dōTERRA essential oils are subjected to rigorous mass spectrometry and gas chromatography testing to ensure extract composition and activity.

Through scientific research and advanced testing, each oil is ensured only the highest quality before purchase. As you begin to use dōTERRA essential oils in your daily life, you will notice firsthand, the CPTG difference.

And perhaps one of the greatest appeals of cleaning with dōTERRA essential oils is that you’ll the added benefit of enjoying the aroma of essential oils while you clean. Using essential oils with uplifting, refreshing, and invigorating scents will make your home feel extra clean.

Some of my favorites to clean with are Lemon, and other citrus oils, like Wild Orange and Lime, for their surface cleansing properties. And mint oils — I love Spearmint + water as a simple, yet effective surface cleaner, as well as Peppermint. Be sure you’re using an amber glass (or oil-safe plastic) spray bottle.

dōTERRA’s On Guard Cleaner Concentrate is a go-to as well as the new Abōde line, which has dishwasher tabs, laundry detergent tabs, hand soap + lotion, dish soap, and a surface cleaner already created for you. Also remember these are highly concentrated so a little bit goes a long way!

BEST PRACTICES FOR CLEANING WITH ESSENTIAL OILS

  • Use high quality essential oils
  • A little oil goes a long way
  • The amount of oil you need will depend on the type of cleaning job
  • Test a small area before cleaning with essential oils
  • Practice responsible storage
  • For homemade essential oil cleaning agents, always shake well before each use
  • 10-Day Essential Oil Cleaning Challenge

Day One: Windows
Combine 1 cup of white vinegar with 1 cup water, and 10 drops Lemon in spray bottle. Spray on the glass and wipe clean with a lint-free cloth (or, if you can find a soy-based newspaper this will actually clean your windows lint-free too.)

Day Two: Install a new air filter
This makes the list because of the importance of having clean air in our homes. If it’s been a bit since you changed your air filter, it’s time to switch it out. If you’re already replacing it regularly, great job! Either way, add three drops of Purify to your air filter to help purify the air in your home.

Day Three: Furniture polish and duster
For wood furniture, add 15 drops of Arborvitae to 1 cup of olive oil, and 1 cup of white distilled vinegar to a glass spray bottle. The best part about this cleaner is that it both dusts and polishes—no need for expensive cleaners.

Day Four: Countertops
Fill a spray bottle with water and add doTERRA On Guard® to clean all countertops and surfaces. (Make sure each time you use it that you shake it well before spraying!)

Day Five:
 Dishwasher
Add Lemon to your dishwasher liquid to remove water spots from your dishes. Or, if you just want to clean out your dishwasher, run it through a rinse cycle with Lemon oil.

Day Six:
 Stainless Steel
Fill a spray bottle with undiluted white vinegar and add 6 drops of Lemon essential oil. Spray your stainless steel appliances and wipe following the grain of the stainless steel.

Day Seven: Toilet Bowl
To make your toilets sparkle, put ½ cup of baking soda, 10 drops of Melaleuca, and ¼ cup of white vinegar directly into the bowl. Scrub as the vinegar and baking soda react.

Day Eight: Tub and Tile
Combine 1 cup white vinegar, 4 teaspoons castile soap, and 10 drops each of Melaleuca and Eucalyptus in a glass spray bottle. Shake well, and spray generously on tub and tile. Allow to sit for 5–10 minutes and wipe clean.

Day Nine: Stain Remover
Add 1–2 drops of Lemon on stains, let stand and then clean with a damp cloth.

Day Ten: Linen and Air Spray
Mix together 2 cups of distilled water, 2 tablespoons of rubbing alcohol, and 15 drops Lavender. Spray your linens and even the air wherever you want a refreshing scent in your home.
