Spring is here, and with it, officially comes the long-anticipated return of the dozens of vibrant and bustling Pittsburgh area farmers markets. Several markets have already started, and you can expect many more throughout the coming month.

The four City of Pittsburgh-operated farmers’ markets, operated by the city’s Office of Special Events, will open for the season starting May 10. All markets will sell locally sourced fresh fruit, vegetables, meats, cheeses and baked goods, along with fresh flowers and other small gardening and gift items. All markets accept food stamps (SNAP), credit and debit cards, part of the Just Harvest Fresh Access program.

In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, all shoppers must wear a mask at all times and maintain social distance. The City offers more information on Farmers Market etiquette.

“Again this year, procedures will directly address opportunities to minimize the spread of coronavirus and we recommend that at-risk individuals attend the markets during the first hour of operation when crowds tend to be smaller,” said Brian Katzenjammers, Manager of the City of Pittsburgh Office of Special Events. “For a second year, our policy will be no lingering, no sampling, no pets on site. Also, no food will be prepared on site, although such food will be prepackaged to take and enjoy elsewhere.”
