Sustainable Swimwear: What to Know Before You Buy
By Hannah Timm

Summer is meant to be a season of fun and relaxation. A season filled with sun, travel, and time by the water. But for many people, there’s one thing that gets in the way: swimwear shopping. I hear it all the time from clients, they dread it so much, they often put it off or skip it altogether. They’re unsure where to shop, what to look for, and how to stay true to their values, especially when it comes to sustainability.
So this summer, I’m here to make things a little easier. In this article, I’ll walk you through what to keep in mind when shopping for sustainable swimwear, and share a few of my go-to brands to get you started.
What to look for when shopping or sustainable swimwear?
When it comes to clothing, many of us have learned to look for natural fibers like cotton, linen, silk, or hemp. But swimwear is a different story. Because swimsuits need to be stretchy, durable, and water-resistant, they’re usually made from synthetic materials, which can make reading the label a little more confusing.
The good news? There are sustainable options out there, you just need to know what to look for.
First up: ECONYL.
This regenerated nylon is made from discarded waste like fishing nets, fabric scraps, and industrial plastic. It’s a favorite in the sustainable swimwear world because it’s strong, flexible, and feels just like traditional nylon, minus the environmental harm.
REPREVE
Another top contender is REPREVE, a recycled polyester made primarily from post-consumer plastic bottles. Like ECONYL, it’s designed to perform well while reducing waste.
Recycled nylon & polyester
You may also see fabrics listed simply as “recycled nylon” or “recycled polyester.” Even if they don’t carry a brand name like ECONYL or REPREVE, these can still be great options, especially if the brand is transparent about its sourcing. They’re often made from post-industrial or post-consumer waste and offer similar performance benefits with a smaller footprint.
Where to shop for sustainable swimwear?
Now that you know what to look for, where do you actually find sustainable swimwear? Between my own research and working with clients, I’ve come across a handful of standout brands that make the search a whole lot easier. Whether you’re looking for something sporty, minimalist, or a little more bold, these labels combine style, quality, and conscious production.
Summersalt:
These sustainable suits are made with recycled textiles and designed for both comfort and performance. The brand is known for its color-blocked one-pieces and bikinis, offering a sporty yet stylish vibe. With a wide range of sizes and most styles priced under $100, they’re an accessible option for conscious shoppers.
Reformation:
Best known for their effortlessly cool dresses and elevated basics, Reformation also offers a chic line of sustainable swimwear. Their suits are classic with a hint of vintage flair - think flattering cuts and timeless silhouettes. Many of their styles are completely plastic-free, thanks to EVO, a bio-based fabric made from renewable castor plants.
Vitamin A:
Founded in 2000, Vitamin A has long been a leader in the sustainable swimwear space. The brand regularly uses REPREVE, in its suits without sacrificing style. Expect fun colors, bold patterns, and modern cuts. Don’t miss their clothing and accessories section either, it’s full of breezy, beach-ready pieces.
Patagonia:
Known for its commitment to environmental responsibility, Patagonia offers a solid range of swimwear for both men and women. Their suits come in a variety of colors and cuts, designed for durability and performance. Made with recycled materials and certified Fair Trade, these pieces are built to last, both in and out of the water.
Swimwear shopping doesn’t have to feel overwhelming, or at odds with your values.
With a little awareness and intention, you can find a suit that feels good on your body and aligns with your commitment to sustainability. Whether you’re heading to the beach, the pool, or just soaking up sun in your backyard, let your swimwear be one small but powerful way to shop more consciously this summer.
