A “gem” of a shop is celebrating its grand opening this weekend in Pittsburgh. Crystal River Gems, the iconic Pittsburgh-based rock shop, has a new location and recently expanded to serve all retail and wholesale customers.
Patrons can pop into the shop May 5-9 for giveaways, prizes, and a unique shopping experience. Crystal River carries rare crystals, of course, gemstones, mineral specimens, beads, fossils, and beautiful things from the earth. A local museum will also be collaborating to provide an educational experience onsite for all visitors.
Crystal River Gems, a family-owned business, first opened in the early 1990s in Station Square as a small retail rock shop. Due to the changing commercial cityscape of Pittsburgh, the events following 9/11, and changing tourism/retail trends, Crystal River Gems relocated to a downtown location in the Highmark Building in the early 2000s.
Growing their wholesale operations, the business now supplies to commercial customers, retail shops, museum gift shops, and many other establishments across the country and abroad. The shopping center in the Highmark Building recently closed due to the construction project onsite, leading to the relocation and design of the new Crystal River Gems showroom in the historic Diamond Building, just across the street at 100 Fifth Avenue.
Crystal River has served customers, from individual rock collectors to famous TV personalities, celebrities, and Pittsburgh tourists. The shop has become one of the country's premier wholesalers of gemstones, minerals, crystals, and other stunning items imported from from all over the world such as Brazil, India, Morocco, Peru, and many other places.
“We are proud to help the tourism industry in Pittsburgh grow, as we draw in buyers from all over the country. They come to us for a one-of-a-kind shopping experience that they likely cannot find anywhere else in Pittsburgh, let alone the world. Everyone is invited to our new showroom grand opening May 5-9 as we celebrate with lots of prizes, giveaways and fun for all. We will be closed on Sunday, May 8 for Mother’s Day but we do have extra special gifts for all the moms who visit us during the grand opening event week,” said Krista Schuster, Vice President of Operations.
The main core value of Crystal River Gems has always been an appreciation for beautiful geological specimens. Being small and family-owned, it's one of the few local businesses in the Pittsburgh area that has withstood the test of time, changing economies, and the impact of the recent pandemic. Customers who support the business are helping the overall downtown Pittsburgh economy, as well as a longstanding local business that practices ethical sourcing.
