Carmeuse Launches Monarch Butterfly Conservation Project
February 24, 2025
Carmeuse Americas launched its Monarch Butterfly Conservation Project in 2022 and will continue it in 2025. This initiative is part of Carmeuse's ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship. Each year, Carmeuse witnesses the beauty of nature at its various locations. However, the company has noted a concerning decline in the population of Monarch butterflies in the wild.
In 2020, Monarch butterflies were added to the endangered species list due to their declining numbers in North America. By October 2023, the International Union for Conservation of Nature changed the species' status to vulnerable.
Recognizing the critical need for conservation, Carmeuse has been meticulously planning and developing a project since late 2022 to support the return of the Monarch butterfly. The project focuses on utilizing Carmeuse's quarries and lands to create habitats conducive to the butterflies' reproduction and survival.
A significant factor in the decline of Monarch butterflies is the reduction of milkweed plants, which are essential for their reproduction. Carmeuse is addressing this issue by planting milkweed and other nectar-producing plants across its locations. The company has identified and prepared areas in Winchester, Maple Grove, Manitowoc, Middletown, Beachville, Millersville, several Michigan quarry locations, and many more to support the Monarch's migration path.
In addition to these efforts, Carmeuse is encouraging its employees to participate in the conservation project. Last year, the company provided packets of milkweed seeds to all interested employees, enabling them to contribute to the cause in their own backyards. This initiative aims to create a widespread impact by increasing the availability of milkweed plants, which are crucial for the Monarch’s lifecycle.
Carmeuse is proud to partner with The Monarch Joint Venture, an organization dedicated to the conservation of the Monarch butterfly. This partnership has been instrumental in providing guidance and assistance for the planning and execution of the project. The Monarch Joint Venture brings together expertise from various sectors, including government agencies, non-profit organizations, and academic institutions, to support the conservation of the Monarch butterfly and its habitats.
Carmeuse's commitment to sustainability and environmental conservation is evident through this project. By supporting the Monarch Butterfly Conservation Project, Carmeuse is taking a significant step towards preserving this iconic species for future generations.
