If you're seeking ways to build a sustainable wardrobe but feel overwhelmed and unsure of where to begin, you're in the right place. In this post, I’ll share some beginner-friendly tips for creating a long-lasting wardrobe that suits every style and budget.

Most people assume that creating a sustainable wardrobe involves shopping secondhand or choosing eco-friendly brands. While those are great options, my tips begin from a different perspective.

Tip #1: Spend Time in Your Closet

Before you start shopping for new pieces to build your sustainable wardrobe, take inventory of what you already have in your closet. Many of us have more items than we realize and often forget what we own. Organize your closet so you can easily see your belongings. This will help you identify gaps in your wardrobe and prevent you from buying duplicates.

Tip #2: Define Your Personal Style

To create a lasting wardrobe, it’s essential that your clothes reflect your personal style. When you look at your closet, the items should represent who you are. If you find yourself buying pieces that don’t resonate with your style, it may be time to refine your personal aesthetic. There are countless ways to discover your style, but one quick tip is to pay attention to what makes you feel good — colors, silhouettes, fabrics, specific clothing items, and outfit combinations. Consider keeping a notes section on your phone to track outfits that make you feel great.

Tip #3: Make Thoughtful Purchases

Now it's time to discuss buying new pieces for your sustainable wardrobe. To ensure that your items stand the test of time, it's important to be mindful of your purchases. Before adding something new to your closet, here are three important questions to ask:

  • Does this item fill a gap in my wardrobe?
  • Does this item align with my personal style?
  • Is this item of the highest quality that my budget allows?

Tip #4: Don’t Forget Garment Care

One of the most effective ways to prolong the life of your wardrobe is to care for your garments properly. Whenever possible, wash your clothes as infrequently as you can using a gentle detergent, and opt for line drying to give them extra care. If you don’t already have a tailor, I suggest finding one in your area for mending and garment maintenance.

When it comes to creating a sustainable wardrobe, there’s no wrong place to start. I encourage you to begin wherever feels most achievable for you.
