Small Pieces That Tell Big Stories

As a stylist who spends countless hours putting outfits together to help women feel good in what they wear, I often find myself thinking about the finishing touches. These details are easy to overlook, but they’re often what bring an outfit to life.
Accessories are different from the rest of our wardrobe. They tend to be the most personal pieces we own, and often the ones we keep the longest. A family heirloom, a piece of jewelry picked up on a trip abroad, or a leather good handcrafted at a market you visited with a friend can carry meaning in a way that many garments simply do not.
When helping someone develop their personal style, I often encourage them to explore the power of accessories. Adding and experimenting with small details is one of the easiest ways to express individuality. Two people can start with nearly identical base outfits, yet transform the entire look through the accessories they choose.
Accessories also allow us to refresh a wardrobe without constantly needing to purchase new clothing.
On days when an outfit feels dull, uninspired, or repetitive, the right accessory can completely change the feeling of what you’re wearing. This makes them one of the most practical tools for building a wardrobe that feels both expressive and lasting.
Many of my favorite accessories are pieces that carry character and are constructed with care. Items made in small batches, crafted by hand, or created using traditional techniques often carry a sense of story. Whether it’s a handcrafted bag, a vintage silk scarf, or a piece of artisan jewelry, these pieces connect us not only to our personal style, but also to the people and craftsmanship behind them.
One of the most beautiful things about accessories is that they often carry a visible connection to craft. A pair of handmade earrings might reflect the work of a small metalsmith shaping each piece individually. A woven bag may come from a long tradition of textile work passed down through generations. Leather goods, when made well, soften and develop character over time, becoming more personal with every year of use. Even a vintage silk scarf can carry its own history, moving from one owner to the next while continuing to add color and personality to an outfit. These pieces remind us that fashion does not always have to be fast or disposable. Sometimes the smallest items in a wardrobe hold the deepest stories.
Choosing accessories with this kind of craftsmanship can also be a thoughtful way to approach fashion more sustainably.
Pieces that are well made and designed to last often remain in our wardrobes for years rather than seasons. Investing in a quality bag, a meaningful piece of jewelry, or a beautifully crafted scarf can add personality to everyday outfits while supporting makers who prioritize care and craftsmanship over mass production.
The accessories we keep the longest often become the most meaningful pieces in our wardrobes. They move with us through different seasons of life, collecting stories along the way. Choosing well-made pieces—items created with care and meant to last—allows us to build wardrobes that feel personal while also supporting a more thoughtful approach to fashion.
